Studio Work
Studio work facilitates experimentation with reoccuring interests in shape, pattern, texture and stripes as well as colour and material qualities.
Joanna is particularly interested in the visual effects of materials such as unglazed ceramic juxtaposed with reflective glass surfaces. Frequently used mosaic materials include, unglazed ceramic, vitreous glass, lustred and silver/gold leaf glass, marble and Venetian glass smalti.
Mosaic offers a particular density of colour due to the pigmentation that permeates the body of the tile. This creates an almost tangible resonance and intensity to an artwork. Colours range from ceramic earth pigments to the bright, chemical dye-like, colouration available in glass.
